Sound-Engineering, Production, Remix & Song-Writing (from 1979 to 2003)

From 1980 until 1987 I worked first as assistant engineer, then house engineer, and eventually a freelance engineer in London. I worked on so many singles and albums with so many artists and producers that it’s difficult to make an accurate list. The main studios I worked in where the now infamous Trident Studios in Soho, CBS Whitfield Street (now Sony), Basing Street (owned by Chris Blackwell of Island Records) which became Sarm West (owned by Trevor Horn), and Maison Rouge (owned then by Roger Daltrey).

Just to give you a rough idea I worked with (NB not comprehensive, other surnames used, Casparis, Rudrum):

ARTISTS: WHAM!, LEVEL 42, ALTERED IMAGES, THE ASSOCIATES,THE ANIMALS, HAZEL O’CONNOR, HEAVEN 17, HOWARD DEVOTO, THE BUZZCOCKS, ADAM ANT, MIDGE URE, ULTRAVOX, ELTON JOHN, SADE, ELKIE BROOKS, MODERN ROMANCE, DEMIS ROUSSOS, JULIO IGLESIAS, THE NOLANS, STEPHEN BISHOP, JOHN McCOY, VISAGE, LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM, JIMMY PURSEY(SHAM 69), KOKOMO, DION ESTUS, BRAND X, GENESIS, PETER GABRIEL, JOYCE SIMS, MELINDA LAY, JAMIE PETRIE, SEMBLE, COURAGE (ARCHIVE), UTOPIA STATION, SAM BATT (LOVE JUNKY), JULIAN NICOLAS, FAITHLESS, MAXI JAZZ, ZAK STARKEY, GARY NUTALL, GARY ROBERTS, KIM WILDE, BOY GEORGE, FRANKIE-GOES-TO-HOLLYWOOD, TALK-TALK, DAVID BOWIE.

“Fantastic” Wham! Innervision (sound engineer, backing vocals) N.B. Andrew Ridgley forgot to put my credit on “Fantastic”, which must go down as one of the worst bits of music business bad luck ever. So he and George paid for me to go on holiday with them to Ibiza. At 21 and just prior to Wham! and the album’s huge success this seemed like a good deal, in particular as Andrew also sold me his yellow Ford Capri cheap. We all stayed at Pike’s Hotel in Ibiza where the ‘Club Tropicana’ video was filmed, in which if you look very very closely you can see me. Any disbelievers go and ask Andrew direct, or for that matter Steve Brown or any of the staff who worked at Maison Rouge Studios.
